Roughly 45 minutes from Arusha, Moshi is a smaller, quieter town with one enormous advantage: on a clear morning, Mount Kilimanjaro fills the entire skyline directly above it. For anyone climbing Africa's highest peak, Moshi — not Arusha — is the real basecamp.
Why Climbers Base in Moshi
Most Kilimanjaro routes (Marangu, Machame, Umbwe) start from gates within an hour of Moshi, so tour operators, gear rental shops and porter agencies are concentrated here rather than in Arusha. If you're doing our Kilimanjaro trek, you'll likely spend your pre-climb briefing and gear check in Moshi.
What to Do in Moshi Before Your Climb
1. Kilimanjaro Gear Check & Final Packing
Reputable operators run a full gear inspection in Moshi the day before departure — worth building in even if you think your kit is complete, since altitude clothing mistakes are one of the most common (and preventable) reasons climbers struggle.
2. Chagga Cultural Tour & Materuni Waterfalls
The Chagga people have farmed Kilimanjaro's lower slopes for centuries. A half-day tour to Materuni village combines a waterfall hike with a traditional coffee-making demonstration on a working shamba (farm) — a good, low-effort way to acclimatise slightly to altitude before the real climb begins.
3. Kilimanjaro Coffee Lodge Grounds
Several coffee estates around Moshi welcome day visitors for tours and tastings, set against direct views of the mountain — a good rest-day activity if you've arrived a day or two early to acclimatise, which we strongly recommend.
Climb, Then Safari
Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti sit close enough together that combining both in one trip is one of our most requested itineraries. A typical structure: arrive in Moshi, climb (6–8 days depending on route), one recovery day, then transfer to the Northern Circuit for a 4–6 day safari. The contrast — days of high-altitude trekking followed by open-vehicle game drives — is genuinely one of the best combinations in African travel.
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Climb
Route choice, acclimatisation schedule and porter welfare standards vary enormously between operators. Talk to us about which route fits your fitness level and timeframe, and we'll build the safari extension around it.
