Almost every safari in northern Tanzania begins in Arusha. It sits at the base of Mount Meru, roughly equidistant from Kilimanjaro International Airport and the entrances to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara — which is exactly why it became the country's unofficial safari capital. Most visitors treat it as a place to pass through, but Arusha rewards a day or two of its own.

Why Arusha Matters to Your Safari

If you're booking a Tanzania safari with Masonda African Adventures, Arusha is almost certainly your starting point — it's where our vehicles are based, where final briefings happen, and where most itineraries build in a buffer night before an early departure to the Serengeti or Tarangire. Understanding the town helps you plan arrival day and departure day properly instead of losing them to transit fatigue.

Top Things to Do in Arusha

1. Arusha Central Market

A working produce and spice market rather than a tourist stop — this is where you'll see the scale of Tanzania's agricultural trade up close: sacks of coffee, cardamom, dried fish, and mountains of fresh produce from the surrounding highlands.

2. Cultural Heritage Centre

Part gallery, part museum, part high-end curio shop, the Cultural Heritage Centre has one of the best collections of East African art, Maasai jewellery, and Tanzanite jewellery in the country, along with a genuinely interesting rotating art gallery upstairs.

3. A Coffee Farm Tour

The volcanic soil around Arusha produces some of Tanzania's best Arabica coffee. Several farms on the town's outskirts offer half-day tours covering the full process from picking to roasting — a relaxed way to spend a morning before a long safari drive.

4. Mount Meru Day Hike

You don't need to summit Meru (Tanzania's second-highest peak) to enjoy it. A half-day walk through Arusha National Park's lower slopes, often combined with viewing giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys in the park itself, is one of the most underrated half-days near the city.

5. Maasai Market & Local Craft Shopping

For souvenirs and textiles at fairer prices than lodge gift shops, the informal Maasai markets around town are worth a visit — bring cash and expect to negotiate respectfully.

Where Arusha Fits in Your Itinerary

Most of our clients spend one night in Arusha before flying or driving to the Northern Circuit parks, and often one more night at the end of the trip before an international flight out of Kilimanjaro. If your flight home is in the evening, a day-room at an Arusha hotel plus a coffee tour or the Cultural Heritage Centre is a far better use of the day than sitting at the airport.
